My Rottweiler 'Wolf'
Dealing with
Spondylosis

Submitted by Margie Wareing on May 6, 2004

Wolf just turned six years old, and has always "wobbled", or had an unusual gait, even as a puppy.  He was just diagnosed with severe spondylosis, where he has as many as three disks fused together in one place, and two fused together in a couple of places.  He has seemed to be bothered by a bit of pain, and some slowness getting up and down, but he still takes long walks on leash, still runs, skips, rolls on his back, etc.

Wolf has been the best dog anyone could have.  I call him my "all purpose dog".  He loves to swim, is perfectly obedience trained, unfailingly loyal.  He never takes his eyes off me, unless there is someone small and helpless in the house, such as my granddaughters  -- then he will not leave their side.  My Wolf is so wonderful, I can't imagine life without him!  The day he spent at the veterinarians being sedated, x-rayed and diagnosed, was a long tough day for me.  I missed him more than he missed me for sure!

For now, he's on Rimadyl and seems comfortable.  I'll continue to monitor his condition, and will update his story here as needed.  I have so many photos of him, it was hard to choose one.  I have pictures of him "driving" my car, meeting my four pound granddaughter for the first time, showing the appropriate reverence for that occasion, giving my parrot "pony rides", and another photo of him lying on his back with kittens crawling all over him (in pure delight!).  His full name is 'Majestic Wolf of Hannibal'.

I appreciate the opportunity to share his story, and I read each and every one of the 'Shared Real Stories' as well. What wonderful, stoic dogs Rottweilers are.
