My
Rottweiler 'Shasta'
Dealing with
Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia
Submitted

We
lost our beloved Shasta after a brief
illness. She was diagnosed with Immune
Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) or
Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) on
10/12/03. Her red blood cell count was
at 14 when we first took her into the
emergency vet. She then spent three days
three until we were able to bring her home.
The doctors told us she had a 50/50 chance.
Each
day she grew stronger. Her red blood
cell count was up to 34 and our veterinarian
was pleased with that. I was supposed
to take her back in a week. The next
day Shasta would hardly eat. Later in
the evening her breathing didn't seem right
to me -- it was irregular. She
reminded me off a person when they were
dying. I could hear the rattle in her
breathes she died a about and hour and a
half later.
Our
vet was in shock like we were. The
only thing they said was that since her
immune system was so low that anything could
get in her system. We miss her so much.
Shasta was only 9 years old.
