Photo: RubyOur Rottweiler Ruby - Dealing with Osteosarcoma
submitted by Michael & Meda Payne on January 14, 2011

On June 24 2010 our beloved Ruby was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Our local vet referred us to Colorado State University Animal Cancer Center in Fort Collins CO. After exam, and biopsy we were told this cancer would be eventually fatal. We were given 3 options, palliative care until the end. Radiation and chemotherapy, or amputation with chemotherapy. We opted for radiation with chemotherapy.

Ruby is a large female, over 100 pounds and we felt the amputation of a front leg with the subsequent healing time added needless suffering/stress to a terminal situation. We are now six months into the disease and feel we made the very best decision. CSU is on the cutting edge of animal cancer treatments and Ruby has participated in two grant supported studies. The cancer has been slowed but she cannot be cured or even put into remission, this cancer is too aggressive and has settled in her lungs.

On the first visit we were told 12-14 months at the outside was her survival time. Its been over 6 months now and she is weaker, but still here and enjoying life. We rescued Ruby in March of 2003 from Rottweiler Rescue Los Angeles, through my membership in the GSRC (Golden State Rottweiler Club) if she holds on another two months, we will have had 8 wonderful years. Ruby is my third female Rottweiler, we lost Erika in 1989 to liver cancer, Jade in 2002 to lymphoma and now Ruby. I refuse to give up on this wonderful breed, because I never saw one of them give up.

I write this to encourage those with Rottweilers to also never give up, take care of your companions and see them to the end with the love and encouragement they have always shown to you. I give my permission to use my email.
