Our Rottweiler Panzer - Dealing Cancer
submitted by Mike & Steph November 12, 2009

Nine and a half years ago I bought my first Rottweiler because I worked nights and wanted to make sure my wife was going to be protected. The pet and companion that we got was all that a pet owner could ask for. The first ten months of his life were amazing until one day he couldn’t get up and we too rushed him to the vet and was given the news he had cruciate ligament damage and if he was to live he would have to have surgery.

Well my wife Stephanie and myself heard about a new procedure where they cut and put steel plates in and the recovery time is 75 percent faster. So we did it and I built a ramp up to our back door and carpeted it so he wouldn’t slip. Over the next 8 years we had our fair share of trips to the vet but I would do it all again.

Fast forward to November 10, 2009 I woke up and went into the living room and found my beloved Panzer on the floor unable to move or get up. With drool and a glazed look in his eyes and a look of please help me.  I found him at 9:30 a.m., he could barely walk and limped on his bad leg. I called our vet and made an appointment with the vet he feels most comfortable with and who loves Panzer for the dog he is.

Although he did eat and drink and do his business there was something definitely wrong and our baby was seriously ill. Yesterday at 2:20 p.m. we had our appointment and they looked at our Panzer. While examining him they found a lump on his left rear inner leg and one on his front. The prognosis was not good - cancer and although it wasn’t bone cancer, this cancer was aggressive and our vet wasn’t hopeful.

So we had to make a decision and rather than let the cancer ravage him, we decided to let him go and we said our goodbyes and let him know how much we loved him and he will always be in our hearts. I love him so incredibly and I know my wife is devastated
