My Rottweiler Montana - Dealing with Cancer
submitted by Keren Gamache
on September 8, 2010

I am so happy to have found your site. You see, just hours ago, I had to make a decision to put our Rottweiler, Montana, down. He would have been 10 years old next month but unfortunately never made it.

He lost weight rapidly and strength to the point he often could not get up. His breathing was deep and hampered. I was spoon feeding him as he continued to lay down in an effort to provide him with nutrients so he could get his strength back. Initially, the blood work could not detect anything and the vet prescribed antibiotics however, he was not getting better but yet seemed to have the desire and zest to hang on.

I was helpless as I watched this animal look at me seeking answers through his eyes. Asking me to make the wrong right again. I decided to go for a second opinion and Montana had to be carried up the stairs and into my van tonight in order to get him to the clinic.

Without the benefit of ongoing diagnostic measures, the vet was certain that Montana was suffering from cancer and one that could not be cured. I leaned my head against his and looked into his eyes that were staring back at me. I cried and spoke to him and as I did, he lifted up his paw onto my arm. I will never know if that were to say don't do this or to indicate that it will be okay.

Montana is now gone and I hope his suffering is as well. I now sit here where he last laid in the only home he ever knew wishing he was alive, healthy and sitting with me as well resting his enormous head on my lap wanting nothing else but to be loved and petted.

My neighbors do not know of the passing of Montana but they too will shed tears as Montana was a star in this neighborhood, so much so that neighbors would come out and ask if they could have their pictures taken with him. He was the big friendly giant that everyone grew to know and love. I love you Montana and I hope all the suffering is gone!
