Our Rottweiler 'Mason'
Dealing with
Immune-Mediated Disease

Submitted April 28, 2004

Our beloved Rottweiler Mason was the love of our lives.

About three weeks ago in the middle of the night our
Rottweiler, Mason, became very ill with vomiting and diarrhea.  We kept a close eye on Mason that night until morning came so we could get him to the doctor.  The day arrived and Mason was very grim.  He was sluggish and still having small bouts of diarrhea.  My husband rushed him to the emergency veterinarian only to find out Mason was already near death.  His temperature was 107 when it should be 101, he was severally dehydrated and he was bleeding internally.

Two days at the emergency hospital, Mason was discharged with instruction to continue care with his regular veterinarian.  A series of tests were done while Mason remained in their care for observation.  We received a call from the vet telling us Mason has what they believed to be an Immune Mediated diagnosis.  His immune system was attacking his platelets, therefore causing him to bleed internally.  Over the course of two weeks Mason was treated with Prednisone, Immuran, Doxycycline and Pepsid AC with two follow-up CBC checks.  We watched our best friend deteriorate right before our eyes.

Finally Mason was unable to get up stairs or even in the car to go for his check ups.  It was then we knew our four legged baby was never going recover.  We tried to think of Mason and how he was suffering, we made the decision with the help of his doctors to send Mason off to protect God.  Since the ideology of Immune Mediated diseases is unknown, we will never know exactly what killed our family member, but what we do know is we will keep his memory alive.

The pain we are experiencing is overwhelming at times.  Mason was not only our dog, but he was our best friend.  When our family experienced hardship, Mason was there to comfort us.  When someone was ill Mason was their medicine.  Our dog knew we were expecting our first child before we knew.  He would walk with me everywhere I went almost as if he were guarding his unborn sibling.  He made our family complete.  We will miss you our dearest Mason.  Thank you for giving us such joy these past four years.  I am sure we will meet up again someday.

We will never forget you,
Mom, Dad and Ryan
