My Rottweiler Legend - Dealing with Liver Cancer

My Rottweiler Legend will be 13 years old in September if she makes it that long. The vet diagnosed her with liver cancer a few weeks ago.

She was not eating and her weight dropped from 102 pounds to 73 pounds since February of this year. She had arthritis in her back legs but was healthy otherwise. She has been taking Tramadol for her arthritis, which helped immensely. But suddenly, she stopped eating and was losing weight.

The vet did an ultrasound and it showed tumors in her liver. He said that they were inoperable. He recommended that I put her down, but I don't want to do that yet because she does not show any signs of suffering. He then prescribed Prednisone and also a liver support medication. These pills have helped her so much. The Prednisone has even improved her mobility. I know I will not have her too much longer, but while she is here, I want to keep her as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

She has been my best friend for 10 years when I adopted her from a friend when she was 2-1/2 years old. No photos available.

Update on July 20, 2010:  Today, I had to make the last trip to the vet with Legend. I knew she was suffering and none of meds were working any longer.

This was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. But she could barely walk and I could see that she was in pain. She did not go easily, as the vet had to administer two doses. She was not going to give up, but she finally went without any pain. I hated to have to do this, but I could not stand to see her suffering any longer. I was hoping to keep her around until her 13th birthday in September, but I knew that would not happen. May Legend rest in peace.
