This is a
picture of our beautiful girl Justice,
who we lost on September 28, 2004 to
osteoscarcoma in her left hip. We had
noticed her limping more than usual
and there was a bit of hip dysplasia
so we assumed that it had flared up
again or gotten worse. Much to
our dismay the vet told us as soon as
she saw her that she thought it was
cancer. We left Justice for x-rays,
for which she had to be sedated.
Justice never did like going to the
vet, and of course our worse fears
were realized.
We then
took her to see an orthopedic surgeon
in Toronto Ontario and had to leave
her overnight -- which was the worst
night of our lives. They did a
bone biopsy to verify the diagnosis.
Our options were to amputate the leg,
do chemo and radiation which might
give us six months to a year or
of course euthanization. After much
family discussion we decided to just
love her to bits, give her whatever
she wanted to eat and let her tell us
when she had had enough. She spent the
night of September 27th, her human
Dad's birthday, visiting with everyone
that came to the house, eating her favorite
thing, "rawhide", and just
being a happy girl.
The
next day when I came home for lunch I
couldn't find her, she was laying in
the dining room, a place she didn't
often go unless we were eating and one
look told me what I had to do.
Our wonderful vet Jennifer Murray and
one of her assistants came to the
house and laying at the front door in
the sunshine my beautiful girl went to
sleep for the last time. We had her
privately cremated and brought her
back to us. On June 5 of this year my
mother passed away, and on the day of
her burial we put Justice by her side
where she loved to be and buried them
together.
We
brought a new little man to our house
in February of this year. 'Jake'
certainly filled a big hole in our
lives. We forgotten how busy
puppies are as we rescued Justice when
she was 1 year old. I only hope
that this horrible disease doesn't
strike Jake.
Let's
hope that someday they will be able to
find a cure for osteosarcoma/cancer.
We at least know now what to watch
for. The Rottweiler is such a
beautiful breed and Jake is going to
be used as a therapy dog to try and
get the message out there. We will
never forget Justice who introduced us
to this breed, who will always own our
hearts.
