We lost our beloved Jesse on January 6, 2009 at 6:55 p.m. The emergency vet tried to restart his heart and got a regular heart beat for 10 seconds then pronounced him dead.

Jesse had been through a lot in his young 9-1/2 years. He had a 1 lb. 7oz fatty tumor removed from his side along with another tumor in his abdomen. In 2006, he was diagnosed with diabetes and has been on insulin shots 2 x’s a day. He weighed in at 150 lbs. at that time. After he was diagnosed we had him on K9 WD from the vet and that helped regulate the diabetes and the dosage of insulin slowly went down, but still twice a day. He also lost weight and got down to 115 lbs. We then took him off of the WD food from the vet because he was doing so well and then he lost too much weight and his diabetes was not under control anymore.

We took him to the vet and he weighed in around 103 lbs and looked so sickly, you could see his back bone. We then started taking him to the vet every other week to have his sugar checked and put him back on WD and got his weight back up to 113 lbs.

He was doing so well and then a couple of weeks ago, he didn’t want to eat so we had to entice him with hamburger meat because he had to eat before we gave him his insulin shot. The night he passed he gobbled up his food and was lying on the floor and we noticed something wasn’t right with him and we thought he was having a seizure. We sent our adopted son down to the neighbor’s house so he didn’t see Jesse going through what ever was going on. Our neighbor helped us load him up in my SUV and I sat up front and then climbed to the back and kept petting him and telling him that we love him and that it was okay if he needed to leave us. Jesse was basically gone by the time we arrived at the emergency vet’s office.

When we adopted our son in 2007, we took our three dogs: a Rottweiler puppy named Morgan, a Shepherd mix named Bear that we fostered and Jesse to have our first family picture done with our new son. Our son while there wanted a picture taken with one of the dogs and he picked Jesse first.  He just knelt next to him and I said to give him a hug so the photographer took his picture with Jesse.

Photo: JesseWe also had a picture taken of Jesse by himself knowing that he may not be with us long due to his health issues. We lost our beloved Scarlett in 2006 to osteosarcoma and now we have lost Jesse. We had him cremated and on his urn it has his name and “Gimme a Cookie” because he always wanted a cookie. He is loved and missed tremendously along with Scarlett.

It is never easy to loose a pet because they are our children and you try to do everything that you can to help them but there are times like this when they were meant to do something else and are waiting for us at "Rainbow Bridge."  We cry every time we read "Rainbow Bridge" but it also gives us the memory that our beloved pet is not hurting anymore and can run and play and be healthy.
