My Rottweiler 'Hailey'
Dealing with
Osteosarcoma

Submitted by Layna

Image: Rottweiler headshot My Rottweiler Hailey was diagnosed with bone cancer five months ago. The cancer is in her back left hock. I opted to not put her through amputation because she had previously had both her knees replaced and really don't think one leg would hold her up.

This is also my second dog that I have had with bone cancer. The last dog was a shepherd mix and I put him down 3 weeks after the diagnosis because he was in extreme pain.

Hailey is hanging in there. She is still loving her walks and playing with her toys. After the diagnosis I completely changed her diet to an all natural raw foods diet and she is on various herbal and Chinese concoctions.

I can just kick myself for not changing her diet long ago before any of this happened. I feel like I should of learned from the last dog.  I believe that the lousy commercial dog food and the toxicity of the annual inoculations that our modern vets insist on contribute to many of the medical problems our dogs face.

Please feel free to email me at layna@bouldernews.infi.net if you would like to discuss possible options to consider when dealing with this osteosarcoma, as well as possible diet changes that may help.
05/03/03 UPDATE:

I wanted to write in a follow-up for my dog Hailey, who I wrote about back in September, 2002. Hailey died in November...I had to put her down because her pain became unbearable. I felt I should write so as to not give people false hope that I had all or any answers for the dreaded osteosarcoma. I did found out, after she died, about a new available drug called Artemisinin. It is derived from a chinese plant we call wormwood or artemesia annua L. I had heard of the experiments that were being done with wormwood while Hailey was still alive but was having a hard time finding anyone to help me find the necessary derivatives.

My advise would be to check out the May, 2003 edition of the 'Whole Dog Journal', website:  www.whole-dog-journal.com, phone: 1-800-829-9165.

Artemisinin sounds like a promising drug.  I would suggest contacting a holistic veterinarian for details (although my holistic vet was not aware of this new drug when I inquired about it for Hailey).  For high quality artemisinin products maybe contact one of the following: Professor Henry Lai,Ph.D., University of Washington, Seattle, phone: 206-543-1071, email: hlai@u.washington.edu or Kristen Kellar-Graney, Washington Cancer Institute, Washington,DC, phone: 202-877-3390, website:  www.sarcoma.org

Also feel free to still contact me for advice.  Hailey did live a happy life for 6 months after diagnosis which sounds disheartening but was actually a long period of time for this type of cancer. My email address is:  layna@infionline.net .
