Our Rottweiler 'Bruener'
Dealing with Osteosarcoma

Submitted by Dee Pearson on 04/23/07

Today my world has been rocked to its core.  My beloved friend, protector, partner, and love is going to not be with us for much longer.  Today, my 6-year old Rottweiler, Bruener, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left tibia.  It does not appear he will make it to his 7th birthday in September.

While my baby spent his day at the vets being poked, prodded, and sedated, I began researching what the vet warned about...bone cancer.

Sadly, my dog is in perfect health otherwise.  Every year I take him for his shots and do blood work.  He, like many other Rottweilers, had no symptoms until a slight limp two weeks ago.  It didn't go away with aspirin so we took him in and now I am so bewildered.  Six short years for the most amazing dog I have ever known.

I don't think I can stop crying.  I don't know if I will ever know a love like Bruener.  So gentle, so brave, so loving, so sweet and calm.  I love him almost as much as my husband.

Based on everyone's stories, the vet's recommendation, and our financial limitations, we will treat his pain and let God take him when it's time.  I just pray God gives us a lot of good days and as much time as he can.  Bruener, I love you so much baby.

Update on 05/31/07:  I am sad to report that Bruener did in fact have bone cancer. He made a rapid decline after his bone biopsy. I had to put him to sleep today because he stopped eating and drinking and he wasn't moving around much.  This has been the hardest and most devastating experience of my life.
