My Rottweiler 'Bosco'
Dealing with
Leukemia

Submitted by Sandra Hassler

Image: Rainbow Bridge Our Rottweiler Bosco passed away on October 7, 2002.  He was just under 9 years old with his next birthday scheduled for November 17th.  He was the joy of our life and had the kind of love within him that any mother would trust around the children.  His disposition was incredibly tolerant and loving.  Needless to say, we will miss him forever.
This is our second Rottweiler.  I felt it noteworthy to mention that both Rottweilers we have had, Ben and Bosco, died of the same type of cancer, in the same leg, and almost at the same age.  We were incredulous, since we didn't realize it may be common in Rottweilers.

The symptoms first began with a slight limping that would not go away. The diagnosis was bone cancer (leukemia) with both Rottweilers.  We kept them with us as long as they could tolerate the pain, but, in the end,  had to put both dogs to sleep which we found very difficult to do, but was by far, the better solution than leaving them suffer.

When I think back, there were no telltale signs of any sort of illness.  Bosco was a hearty, happy and active animal.  He was taken on regular visits to our vet and came away with a clean bill of health.  I, of course, wish that this would have been something we could have prevented. Unfortunately, I just learned of this website today and have already had Bosco cremated with his ashes placed in an urn to go along side Ben's.

Thank you for letting me share this with you.  I am still in mourning.  I've never had such a wonderful experience with animals as I have with Rottweilers.  They taught me how to love all things in life.
