Our Rottweiler 'Ben'
Dealing with
Hemangiosarcoma

Submitted by Tina Snow on March 13, 2008

Our 12-year old Rottweiler Ben, who normally eats all his food at once (2 times a day) is not wanting to eat it anymore and when he does he vomits undigested food a few hours later.  He has no obstruction-x-ray done). His gums are pale, he pants a lot (it's cold here in Wisconsin) and he drinks much water through out the day.

We have changed his food to canned IAMS and he is on 100 mg Rimadyl 2x a day for bone chips in his front legs from letting him jump in and out truck beds in the past.  A note to the wise:  do not let your dogs jump in and out of vehicles like pick up truck beds. The vet is doing an ultra sound today and thinks he has a pancreas issue?

(After the vet appointment) It looks like Ben has spots on his spleen/liver, what the vet calls Hemangiosarcoma.  All the reading I've done it sounds like this is his problem. The vet said 1 month to 6 weeks to live. He seems to be doing well on the canned food (and I guess I'm in denial). That's it for me with dogs! They just don't last long enough my heart is breaking over this.  Everyone in our neighborhood knows and loves him.
