Amy was the
sweetest blessing to my husband and I. We
were lucky enough to have her enrich our
lives for 7 years and she is constantly in
our hearts. After repeated bouts of
limping on her front right leg due to what
was thought to be a pulled muscle we
finally pressed for x-rays and were
crushed to discover that it was most
likely cancer. We tried alternative herbal
medicine and found Amy to be happy and
energetic. Yet eventually we were resigned
to the fact that the specialists advised
us to amputate as soon as possible. The first of many
tragedies and triumphs we were to share
with our girl. It was heartbreaking to see
our baby missing her leg, but it was the
hope of defeating this brutal disease that
made it worth the try.
We followed with
eight rounds of chemo. The same chemo that
children were receiving at the Alberta
Children's hospital. She battled through
each chemo and we clung to the hope that
she might be one the survivors. Sadly,
after the 8th chemo she remained weakened.
X-rays and blood work confirmed that
cancer was now heavily visible in her
lungs.
We knew that we only had a very
short time and we enjoyed the moments we
were allowed. We took our last trip out to
Kanaskis and she took a dip in the lake.
She was happy and she still had that
twinkle in her eye. She quickly went
downhill from that last special day. She
grew weaker and in her last days she was
losing her balance, she took some devastating
falls and she lost the
sparkle in her eyes.
We took her in to the
clinic on Sunday, June 8th, 2003. We said
goodbye. There is still a hole in our
hearts in the shape of our Amy.
